I live just outside of Philadelphia, PA. At certain times of the year, before I discovered the anti-inflammatory diet, my hips would ache especially before and during rain episodes, and more so when the Temperatures dropped in November. I had arthritis at that time, but I remember all that pain in the rain.
I would be waken up in the middle of the night by my hip aching… I would get up, usually 2 AM-ish, take 2 Advil and to try to go back to bed. I was so uncomfortable, it hurt so bad, and after those broken nights of sleep, my pain would be worse the next day – sometimes I just wanted to cry.
Ever feel like there is so much pressure in your joints, you feel like you’re stuffing a second pillow into the pillow case?
It is not easy! and very uncomfortable for your joints!
NO more pain in the rain for me! or you…
With all this rain this past week, I would have had pain in my hips that would increase my discomfort. But today, I don’t – and that was 10 years ago since I got my hip replacement on that side. I know, first-hand, that implementing an anti-inflammatory plan was key to this! I lost that pain and it has not come back!
Now, the 4-6 days of rain from lingering hurricanes just affects my mood where I feel grumpy, sad and unmotivated. But i keep moving cause, movement makes me happy!
So this pain in the rain thing….I call this the 2-pillow affect where it’s like you are trying to put 2 pillows into one pillow case. It’s a result of extra inflammation in your body and your joints. Inflammation isn’t always that selective except with injuries where you stubbed toe swells up, or you cut finger bleeds and throbs for a few days.
As the barometric pressure changes, the joints expand and contract accordingly. If you have inflammation in the joints, this expansion feels like more pressure than usual and you feel pain as your inner joint fluids start pressing on the outer casing. So your knees, hips, back, shoulders, wrists… all can be really achy, stiff and predicting the rainy weather.
This pain was excruciating before I implemented an anti-inflammatory protocol. Some of the foods you eat are unknowingly increasing the inflammation artificially. I call it fake inflammation. The biggest culprits are wheat and sugar. It doesn’t matter if it is organic or sprouted wheat, or organic sugar, both are the most inflammatory. Inflammation is a natural response to ‘invaders’ of the body, but most of us don’t expect common athlete foods to be inflammatory and contributing to our pain-in-the-rain symptoms.
When we work together, I identify the foods you are eating and help you replace those foods with safe alternatives. For wheat, we review all the grains and offer safe options which can include white or wild rice, oats or potatoes. With sugar, we usually look at honey or maple syrup as safe alternatives.
If you’ve been in more pain the past few rainy days, waking up in the middle of the night in pain, and feeling stiff and way achier than usual, reach out so we can get you feeling better in less than 4-8 weeks depending on how quickly you want to implement the plan.
I know it can be done – not just from my own experience, but countless other athletes who now have no pain in the rain or any time going up and down stairs, running or whatever their sport by implementing an anti-inflammatory diet.
You’ll feel better, sleep better, move better and feel like you again…and neither rain or dropping temperatures will increase your pain. I know because I did it myself 10 years ago and haven ever had this pain increase because of rain.
SO if you are ready to have no pain in the rain, contact me and we’ll get you started! You’ll be pain free in no time.
