Ever have an injury? You feel like the world is ending, but it may be the injury is the beginning of a journey – a journey to balance, self love and discovering self. The injuries may be the journey of asking for help rather than doing it all alone.
As you all know, I have been battling this hip injury and have been in “hip rehab” mode for quite some time.
First it started 3.5 years ago and seemed to have gotten “good enough better” last year that I got back to running and did my first triathlon in 5 some years. It was awesome! I finally felt like I was back in the game so to speak.
Then this past February, that same hip screamed at me
“Hey, I need to be fixed completely! None of this ‘good enough’ anymore”
Yes, that was my body’s way of getting my attention and ask others for help.
As an athlete, I tend to get in my own way of healing by ignoring that the problem is that bad. Then I feel like “I can do this myself!” yet, I have learned time after time, that I can help myself, but not nearly as well as when I employ others to help me identify what I need to work on.
Similar to me working with my own clients – if I am not asking for help, how do I expect athletes to ask me to help them with their injury, overwhelm, fatigue and stress? Kind of the ‘what you put out is what you get back” thing??
Once I was able to get the help I needed below, it was still up to me to keep listening and journey towards the goal of recovering fully from my injury. My injury was helping me expand my network of healers so to speak…It took others to pinpoint what needed healing on both the physical and mental planes of the injury.
I have been diligent with PT exercises (thanks for Andy Seo and Becca Manton), massage with Sarah Downing and Beth Trickett Manning (who did some emotional release too), continued Path To Heal sessions (weekly with Becky Cohen and others – there was a lot of emotional stuck points!)
The injury was my journey to learn patience and loving to self when I wanted to scream in frustration! I used the Path To Heal to get rid of more emotional stuck points and finding that balance between enough activity to feed my soul but not too much to piss off my hip. Yes, I had to find balance and see the beauty in the process. I had to journey to embracing this process which actually made the difference in this multi-dimensional injury healing journey.
Coupled with an anti-inflammatory diet and regular yoga….and absolute awareness of every way my body moved on land, on bike and in water…..
I am happy to say, I see the finish line!
Something shifted in Thursday’s yoga session, and that teeny muscle group above/at top of my hip started engaging!
So the hip is more stable and I feel like I still have some work to continue with, but I was able to get a 43 mile ride this weekend and i just got tired cause I am just out of shape.
This injury and recovery has taught me a lot and it also helps me be a better practitioner to and for my clients. Nutrition, energy work and just helping you learn compassion and loving to self by turning off the judgemental mind to be present. What does my injury want me to do today to help it heal?? What does my body want me to do today? Now? I had to listen. And I can help you learn your body’s way of communicating.
The one thing that was really interesting is that MY hip pain was a result of my fear.
Fear of what? Fear of me being authentically me, and stepping into who I really am.
I am an intuitive nutrition therapy coach. I am a healer. I have a unique skill set that enables me to get to the root of your issues and clear the emotional barriers to pain.
I had to learn this myself and know that once I stepped in, and viewed my weird abilities of intuition, energy work and channeling messages as truly gifts, I could transform other athletes to love the skin they are in. I had to get over my own fear of being punished and criticized for being me. And this was an adverse emotional experience from childhood when I was put in the corner for hugging and kissing my new best friend. More on that in another blog….
Injuries are often about the journey to self-discovery rather than just healing the physical pain. If you are injured, consider asking for help – help with nutrition to lessen the pain, help with identifying and releasing emotional pain associated with the injury and others to help with the physical movement therapy.
It takes a team, and sometimes that team is outside of you, but it also includes all aspects of you. Often it also helps to have someone like me, who can not only relate, but help you learn how to start listening to your body signs and know what it is asking for. Injuries are often the start of your journey back to who you really are. I would love to be a part of your team to recovery!
