I had a client finish her first marathon recently (check out her blog post). They lined up their running coach, support crew, physical therapy and me for sports nutrition coaching. We worked together on the Race Day Nutrition Package. This included every day nutrition, recovery meals, training with real food for long runs and more. I realized during her sessions, I was more than just a sports nutrition coach – I am a multi-dimensional coach!
My experiences have always helped my clients with their issues. Why? I have been there. I have experienced it. I have had adrenal exhaustion, dehydration, PMS, mood swings, memory loss due to nutrient deficiencies, chronic pain, degenerative hip condition, surgery. I have had injuries, I have been an elite athlete, i have been an beginner athlete, and I also let my body shut itself down only to learn how to help it heal naturally. I have learned how nutrition plays a key role in health as does stress reduction, knowing how to allow the body to heal, learning spiritual exercises and healing modalities like The Path To Heal and Nutrition Response Testing to help with total body healing. I can wear multiple hats and use any of them at anytime with my clients, finding the one that is appropriate at the time.
With this client, we worked on the race day nutrition and what would work using real food to fuel them for their marathon. Then we worked on recovery meals and timing of those meals. Then an injury crept in. They were already doing the physical therapy, but not doing the exercises regularly when traveling, and waiting til they had an appointment. Having just gone thru my surgery, I knew how much of a difference those PT exercise made, and how important it was to do them daily. Even when tired, I would do all the exercise, but maybe 5 instead of 10 repetitions. I always felt better afterwards and the next day! So instead of nutrition advice (well, we did review anti-inflammatory principles and foods to include or avoid to minimize inflammation), I spent 20 minutes talking about the importance of PT exercises! And yes, they would make a difference even 2 weeks before the event! Had I not gone through this issue myself, it would be very difficult to give any advice on the subject.
Working with clients, I become a multi-dimensional coach, putting on the hat I need for the issue at hand. I have gone thru many issues, and experience is much more helpful than reading suggestions in a book, or learning it in a seminar! I can understand the client better and their issue. I can empathize better and use my personal experiences to help my clients progress.
If you want help getting yourself healthier, losing weight, eating better, getting ready for your first marathon or ways to reduce your pain, working with a multi-dimensional coach can be the difference between truly understanding, and just getting directives. I help you achieve your goals using all the tools in my kit including my personal experiences. One way does not work for everyone. Helping clients is what I love to do!
